Where in the world is Uruguay?

I know one of the reasons for my blog is to keep in touch with my friends and family in Uruguay. But for many people and friends from the United States and readers from other countries, Uruguay is not a very familiar country. Let me tell you a little bit about it. We are a small country located on South America, in between Brazil and Argentina. We are about 3 million people. Its capital, Montevideo hosts about 1 1/2 million people. I am from a little town named Mercedes (yes, like the car) and let me tell you, it is absolutely beautiful. It has the 4 seasons except snow. The coldest I've lived there was 15 degrees Fahrenheit. It has beautiful beaches, ports, tourist attractions and one of the sweetest people you'll meet. We are not a rich country, but we are smart. Uruguay is one of the countries with the lowest percentage of people not getting elementary education. And education is FREE, including COLLEGE!

Now I feel better that you have a better idea of where I am from. Isn't it lovely? Come visit!!
And some of the traditions...

We drink something called "mate." It is like herbal tea. We put it in a wood gourd and pour hot water into it. We drink it through a metal straw called "bombilla." We are big on Carnival, churros and Pericon, the national dance.

We have lots of markets on the streets in the weekend. They are called "Feria."

Chivitos are the most famous kind of sandwich!! I'll be posting my recipe soon.
I hope you got to know me a little bit better. Thanks for stopping by!
