For the Soul Sundays

It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, "Always do what you are afraid to do."

Homemade Laundry Soap

Since I have three little angels and I do laundry almost everyday, I decided it was time to save up some money in laundry detergent. After researching a whole lot, I decided it was better to go with the powder version versus the gel, which in my opinion, it is harder to do and it gets a little hard over time. I have been using the powder detergent for over a month, so I feel pretty safe in posting the recipe. The clothes come out clean and they smell great (thanks to the Fels-Naphta). They just smell clean! And the whites come out super white!
So here it goes, it is really simple:

1 box Borax
1 box of Baking Soda ( the big one, not the baking size)
1 Box of Super Washer Soda
3 bars of Fels Naphta soap
1 to 2 containers of Oxyclean (I use two)

The only thing you need to do is grate the Fels-Naphta (smells great) and combine all the ingredients. Make sure you use a 5 gallon bucket to mix it. You can store it in a smaller container for convenience. Add 3 tablespoons of powder to the water while running. The Fels-Naphta acutally melts in the water.

For the gel version, melt the soap in water. Add hot water to the bucket and add the powders, then add the melted soap. You can also add scented oil drops, such as lavender.

For people with sensitive skin, omit the Borax. However, I do not know if the clothes will come out as clean as they come using it. I would not use this soap with babies. I have a 1 year old and she has had no problems with it.
Overall, it costs about 15 dollars to buy everything. I am going on my second month on it and still have more than half of the five gallon bucket left. I am loving this!
